The Boys are Back
SCORE: 69
The Boys are Back is the most depressing movie I have seen all year
long. It also made me realize how easily we can mess up our lives by
picking the worst paths possible. What makes this DVD so interesting is
it is inspired by a real story. This man's second wife dies of cancer.
He has a six year old son to learn how to deal with. Right after that
his teenage son (from his first marriage) decides he wants to spend some
time with his father. The Boys are Back shows the fathers attempt to
raise his children with no rules.
There are some beautiful scenes in The Boys are Back. There was also a
troubling scene where the little boy was not wearing a shirt and talking
about his nipples. In another scene he is driving across the beach with
his son on the front wind shield of the vehicle. The Boys are Back
contains a lot of scenes of drinking, and depression. There was also
some scenes of anger, violence, and destruction on this DVD.
The most shocking part of The Boys are Back is the language. There is a
lot of bad language in this movie. I thought there would be a few words
here and there, but the volume was much higher than I expected. There
are also scenes of children disrespecting adults in The Boys are Back.
The music in this film fits the theme of loss.
There are a couple of bonus features in The Boys are Back. The
photographic journey with optional commentary is really cool. Seeing the
real people meet the actors playing them was an interesting extra. There
are also some sneak peaks of upcoming films on this disc. The Boys are
Back is a very strong movie, and not one that will be watched quickly
after the last viewing.
I was absolutely amazed this male only family survived as long as they
did. This movie chronicles the many mistakes the father made, and how he
fought to keep his children. The Boys are Back contains a lot of sadness
that really stick with me. I could not believe his lazy attempt at
parenting, and how he crawled into the bottle. The positive aspect of
this movie is to avoid those mistakes.
I really believe in the traditional family unit. A father and mother are
needed to give children the best chance of survival in life. The Boys
are Back tries to go against the grain in so many ways. I wound up
baffled at many of the choices he made. I also could not believe how
insensitive his boss was to his situation. All in all The Boys are Back
was a real downer. Others may come away with encouragement though.
