Steel Horizon

Steel Horizon is a Nintendo DS video game that lost its way. This turn based strategy game is based on World War II. Yeah another war based video game that is stuck on that war. World War II has been so overdone in the video game industry that it really deserves its very own genre section. The player gets to send ships out to sea, hunting the enemy. Blow up their ships to win the day. Steel Horizon has a rock paper scissors kind of thing going on. These ships are strong against these, but weak against the other kind. There are various kinds of ships, but once you have the concept down it is easy to play. Exploit weaknesses in your opponent to win.

Steel Horizon is absolutely ugly in terms of graphics. It looks to me like this was a Personal Computer (PC) port that dropped everything in terms of details. There are some videos that play in Steel Horizon from time to time that were actually pretty cool. They were a little dark though. Ships explode and sink all the time, and I grew numb to the death toll.

If I were to believe this hand held video game, then I would think that bad language is part of every area of every war. Steel Horizon preaches this message, as well as how crazy the leaders were on both sides. This attempt to redefine history does not sit well with me or Family Friendly Gaming. The music is okay in Steel Horizon. It shoots for majestic, but sinks like so many of the ships in the game.

If you and a friend both have this game, and feel like sinking each others battleships, then there is a multiplayer mode. The levels in Steel Horizon take a long time to complete, so expect a lengthy play time. If you can get into Steel Horizon, then you will get your moneys worth.

What a nice segway huh? I could not stand the boring gameplay aspects in Steel Horizon. The action is repeated so often that it nearly drove me wacko. Certain menu screen choices that must be repeated over and over again were frustrating beyond belief. There are a lot better controlling, and playing turn based strategy games on the Nintendo DS. The little action scenes where the violence plays out were almost pointless in my opinion. I did not have fun playing Steel Horizon in any way, shape or form.

I really hoped that Steel Horizon would have been historically accurate. Instead it preaches distrust, and hatred of those God has allowed into positions of leadership. Steel Horizon also tries to say that both were fighting honorably. I can not fathom such a concept since I know a few things about that war.
