Star Trek

I have seen many of the Star Trek movies and television shows over the years. I enjoyed a lot of the original, The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine. Voyager bored me after a few seasons, and Enterprise annoyed me quickly. It felt like Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future had gotten lost after his passing. Ultra political correctness, and extreme liberalism dominated at the end. So I hoped a breath of fresh air (J.J. Abrams) could restore the franchise. Be careful what you wish for though.

Star Trek has a real shine in the visuals. Space looks fantastic, and there are some cinematic tricks that make this movie look more realistic. The old Star Fleet uniforms are back and look good. Star Trek contains a lot of violence, which range from fist fights to space explosions. The time travel, and warp drive aspects look fantastic. Star Trek also contains some enticement to lust issues. The characters could have worn more clothes, and the plot aspects could have been kept. I will not excuse this movie for making that choice.

Star Trek deals with various issues. There is an inter-species which we can equate to inter-racial. There is revenge, anger, and hatred that is also dealt with. Living up to our parents accomplishments is one of the most interesting aspects of Star Trek. There is some bad language in this film, that honestly was not really needed. The whole time travel is in this movie, but not in a normal Star Trek manner.

Trekkies will really get into the special features on this DVD. They probably already have. I found the commentary, and A New Vision feature to be the most interesting. This gave a lot of behind the scenes info that made Star Trek more interesting. If you are trying to decide whether to purchase or not, I would suggest renting it from Red Box (editor: or somewhere else) first.

I found a lot to like about Star Trek on DVD. I wish it was a lot cleaner though. There are more than a couple of things this movie could have done without. I was unhappy to see how many liberties were taken with the timeline. They essentially rewrote the entire Star Trek universe history. This movie was heralded as showing us how the crew of the Enterprise got together. However this entire movie was an alternate timeline. Which means nothing it tells us is the Star Trek we knew.

Because of the content issues Star Trek is not for children. The violence is up there, and the other content will send children to another room. I like the concept of a new Star Trek and feel the actors do a wonderful job. I would like to see the timeline restored, and the content cleaned up. Too much was changed for me.
