Spongebobs Boating Bash

I saw Spongebob's Boating Bash and instantly thought this would be a racing game. The only difference is the players would race boats, and they would be underwater. Yeah the Spongebob universe can have yah scratching your head. Well I was wrong. Spongebob's Boating Bash is a demolition derby game done with boats that are underwater. Bash, crash and smash your opponents. There are a few races in this game thrown in to change the tempo.

There are some decent colors used with the boats in Spongebob's Boating Bash. The levels are pretty bland looking though. There are some details, and some animation (editor: mainly in the cut scenes). The goal of this Wii game is to smash into other competitors as hard as possible. Hit them hard enough and parts go flying off. Collect those parts for points. It is important to note that not all levels have that as the main goal. Some levels have the player scoring more points, and that are various ways to earn points. Vehicles show damage, and look different after certain sections are knocked off.

I believe that there are two groups of people when it comes to SpongeBob. Either you get the humor, or you don't. Some of us here at Family Friendly Gaming got the humor in Spongebob's Boating Bash. Others looked at the game, and us with curious stares. There is a story to this game about SpongeBob trying to get his drivers license.

THQ made sure some interesting extras were included in Spongebob's Boating Bash. You can re-watch any of the movies that you have unlocked. Actually viewing everything you unlocked is the main theme to the extras. There are over one hundred boats that are customizable in Spongebob's Boating Bash. Four players can enjoy this game at the same time.

The majority of Spongebob's Boating Bash is crashing into other characters. I was a little dismayed when I realize that is the core of this game. There are various ways to control Spongebob's Boating Bash, and some are better than others. There are some slick moves players can perform while playing this Wii game. There are also times where I had to restart a level because I got stuck.

Spongebob's Boating Bash is a double edged sword in my opinion. This game encourages families to play together. Smashing into one another actually lead to some real life conflicts, so you might want to be careful. I really liked the idea of a SpongeBob racing game, and I would love to see that done in place of a demolition derby style game. I like how Spongebob's Boating Bash is compatible with the Wii Wheel. It would have been really cool for an online mode, and compatible with Wii Speak.
