Spelunker HD

Do you go to message boards and complain that video games are too easy these days? Do you talk to your friends about how quickly you master game after game? Are you someone who complains they are bored? Are you seeking a challenge? If you answer yes to any of those questions then you need to check out Spelunker HD on the Playstation 3 (PS3). This game is old school difficulty, along with memorization of where all the traps are. This game is for those who want to play the weakest action hero in the history of video games.

Spelunker HD let us play in two different visual modes. The first one is remix, which looks really good. The second is the original which has not held up too well. Play on remix, and you will thank me. If you must see the original then you can check it out. Tozai Games kept Spelunker HD very family friendly in terms of deaths. You jump to far, walk off a ladder (instead of jump), your character stops and you go back to the last continuation point. Don't worry that will happen hundreds of times. Sit around too long, you die; let a ghost touch you, you die; fall too far, you die. Are you getting the picture yet?

The music is really thumping in Spelunker HD. Although the music I heard the most was the death march. At least that is the name I gave it when I died. In fact it became its very own song for me. This PS3 game is all about competition, getting the most points. It is also about trying to keep your poor little guy alive. This is much harder than it sounds. If you do not believe me then play Spelunker HD. You will change your tune quickly.

One of the cool things about Spelunker HD is groups can play this game together. This is a neat feature in a very difficult game. Spelunker HD also keeps track of all kind of stats. It takes those stats and shows you how well you did compared to all the other players in the world. I hope to break 2500 some year. Yes there are some amazingly skilled players out there. They put me shame with their skills, and lack of a real life.

The controls work really well in Spelunker HD. The level of game play required to be successful in this PS3 game in insane. I had to always keep moving, consistently identify problems, and avoid them. The difficulty of Spelunker HD will turn off some family members. Those that embrace such a challenge as an opportunity will love and hate Spelunker HD. They will love it when they pass, and will hate it the hundreds of time they fail. There is a tutorial of this game if you need to learn the basic skills.

Attention to detail is one of the main lessons in Spelunker HD. There is also a minor lesson in doing your best, and solving problems quickly. Families can use this game to discuss seeing problems, and the best way to avoid them. I had fun playing Spelunker HD, even if it frustrated me again and again. I did improve each time I played it, and appreciate the opportunity to play Spelunker HD.

Family Friendly Gaming was given a reviewable copy of Spelunker HD on the Playstation 3.
