Sonic Colors

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the major icons of the video game industry. Not every single game of his has been great. The Wii games have been pretty good. Sonic Colors introduces us to a repentant Dr Eggman. He creates an amusement park to atone for his past transgressions. But not everything is as it seems. Sonic gets introduces to some new characters - Wisps. They merge with Sonic for a few seconds giving him some amazing new powers. They also are unlocked in certain worlds which open up paths in other worlds.

The 3D and 2D mixture in Sonic Colors is fantastic. Sega merged the two together quite nicely while racing along in a level. I almost cringe to say 3D, since there is space while running toward the camera. There can also be steps going up, to the left, right, etc. The colors in Sonic Colors are exceptional, and add a real dimension. The Wisps are different colors and that makes it easy to differentiate them. Sonic Colors does contain violence as the player turns into a ball, and hits robotic characters. This frees enslaved characters which is a nice staple of the Sonic franchise.

The music in Sonic Colors is awesome, and there is a lot of humor in the dialogue. I lost track of how many times I laughed at various jokes. The voices in Sonic Colors are different. I feel my brain freezing on that because they are different. I am not really fond of the different voices, but that is because I am so accustomed to the anime ones. Which have been in so many other Sonic games. Ultimately it is what it is. They are different.

The way Sega added the Wisps is pure genius. Once a new Wisp has been unlocked then there are reasons to replay past levels. The grade you receive in a level of Sonic Colors is another reason to replay it. There are also twenty levels for two players to play at the same time. This can be done cooperative or competitive. Family Friendly Gaming was given a reviewable copy of Sonic Colors. With that said I do believe Sonic Colors is worth the money.

Anyone tired of Sonic the Hedgehog? Well you can unlock your Mii and play with it. In the Sonic Simulator at least. The speed in Sonic Colors is insane. At times I was not really sure where Sonic was, so I hoped everything was okay. It was because Sonic Colors is very nice to the players. Trust me you can make mistakes, lose all your rings, and die. However if you know what you are doing you can make it through the levels. The length of the levels is longer than I am used to, but I embraced that. I had a lot of fun playing Sonic Colors, as did those who played with me.

Sonic Colors is all about freeing those who have been enslaved. This lesson is something we still need on planet earth. There are people enslaved in various countries all over the world. The various powers from a Wisp merging with Sonic did not bother me, but I wanted to bring it up to families who may have a problem with it. I believe that Sega has hit a chord with Sonic Colors, and hope for a rainbow of this kind of game in the future. It was my pleasure to be able to play and review Sonic Colors on the Wii.
