Sly Collection

Sony is doing a fantastic thing by releasing The Sly Collection. This Playstation 3 (PS3) game includes Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Sly Cooper 2: Band of Thieves, and Sly 3: Honor Amongst Thieves. These three Playstation 2 (PS2) games have been remastered in high definition. They are 3D compatible, and also compatible with the Playstation Move.

The storyline starts out with Sly Cooper being orphaned thanks to five evil master criminals. They stole parts of his families thief book. He takes them out, but one of them is not completely destroyed - hence the second game. In the third game he finds out that his family has a major vault, and he wants to get into his rightful inheritance. Well rightful may not be accurate since it was stolen in the first place.

The graphics in The Sly Collection show their age. They are however better than I imagined them to be. The remastering shows, and the cel shading has some nice shine. There is violence in The Sly Collection as the player must subdue a variety of guards. Some guards can be bypassed by just running past them, or around them. I really enjoyed the stealth elements of The Sly Collection, where I had to avoid search lights. There is some female attire in The Sly Collection that even though they are animal looking humans is suggestive. I am surprised the ESRB missed that.

The music in The Sly Collection fits the theme, and the voice acting is superb. Sly talks about how he only steals from other criminals. There is no challenge to steal from normal people. So nice to know we are not worthy enough of his stealing ways. The concept of trying to justify theft bothers me on so many different levels. The police capture him, but he manages to escape quickly.

I love the idea of collections, and compilations. I did not catch this franchise the first time around, so it is neat to see Sony putting the games together and giving us an opportunity to go through them at once. The Sly Collection also includes some mini games that families can enjoy. I hope there are more games like The Sly Collection in the near future. It will take families many hours to complete these three games, and unlock all the additional content.

The platform action in The Sly Collection is very easy to learn. Each of the three games gives verbal and written commands on what needs to be done where. This makes learning and playing these games so much easier. The level design is intelligent. Looking around an area will always help when one gets stuck. I had fun playing The Sly Collection, and am thankful Sony sent Family Friendly Gaming a reviewable copy.

I have never believed in gray areas when it comes to theft. In my life things have been stolen from me, and that is one of the worst feelings on the planet. Someone violates you, your area, and your property because they selfishly believe they have more of a right to your property than you do. I know a lot of people say no one gets hurt, but in reality people do get hurt. Insurance rates go up for everyone, and many times we have to pay for a replacement.

Why did I got on that diatribe? Well The Sly Collection has you play a thief, and he has a whole gang that helps him get away with it. There is also an undertone of getting revenge on someone who wronged you. This is exactly the opposite of turning the other cheek, and loving ones enemies. Revenge begets more revenge which makes the world a worse place to live in. Loving ones enemies makes the world a better place.

I can think of numerous other franchises that I hope get put into Collections in the near future. Crash Bandicoot, older Gran Turismo games, and Hot Shots games come to mind.
