Shrek Forever After Shrek Forever After

Based on the final Shrek movie of the same name, Shrek Forever After (for the Wii) follows our favorite Shrek characters as they journey through an alternate version of Far Far Away. Shrek, longing to relive his days as a bachelor, signs a contract with the devious Rumpelstiltskin that changes everything in Shrek’s world. When Shrek realizes what has happened it is too late. In this alternate universe he and Fiona have never met, Puss In Boots is an obese house cat and Donkey is a slave animal. In order to save Far Far Away, players must use Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and Puss In Boots to defeat Rumpelstiltskin.

In single player mode, gamers will be able to change between the four characters by a simple press of the directional (D-Pad) button on the Wii Remote. Each of the four main characters are designated a certain directional location on the D-pad. Each character is given a special ability that will be necessary to beat the levels. For example, Donkey is used to kick open doors, as designated by horseshoes on the applicable obstacle. Players will also be able to go between the original and new alternate Far Far Away. The story is relatively short and is not very difficult, even for novice gamers.

The strongest feature in Shrek Forever After is the four-player co-op mode. Players will be able to jump in and out of the action with the press of a button. With four-player co-op, the game becomes a blast for the whole family or a group of friends. The humorous banter between the characters and the fun of battling together will provide hours of fun and entertainment. Speaking of the banter between the characters, the voice acting in Shrek Forever After is pretty good for the most part, and resembles the interaction between the characters from the movies. Graphically speaking, Shrek Forever After on the Wii comes across as unpolished and resembles a bad PlayStation 2 game. The cut scenes can be a wonderful representation of the CGI in the Shrek films, so the in-game graphics are that much more disappointing.

There is little else to speak of regarding Shrek Forever After because the story is so short and there are no additional game modes. It would have been great to see some mini games included, which could have made great use of the Wii motion controls. Instead, gamers fork out full price for a game with little replay value and nothing extra to offer.

It is unfortunate that Shrek Forever After does not offer more, as gamers will feel somewhat disappointed when the story mode comes to an end so quickly. However, Shrek Forever After can encourage teamwork and foster an environment of fun. Gamers will find themselves working together (in co-op mode) with their friends and family having a blast.

If you are a fan of the movie franchise or enjoyed the previous Shrek games, then you will definitely enjoy Shrek Forever After, even if the adventure is short.
