Sesame Street Abby and Friends P is for Princess
SCORE: 73
Sesame Street Abby and Friends P is for Princess may be the first
Sesame Street DVD that I found annoying. My reaction to all the others
has been drastically different. The first thing I noticed about this DVD
is it is for girls only. When Family Friendly Gaming was given a
reviewable copy we tested this. Boys are not at all impressed with
Sesame Street Abby and Friends P is for Princess. What surprised me is
little girls were not that impressed either. There were numerous
disappointments with the prince (more on that to come).
The visuals in Sesame Street Abby and Friends P is for Princess are
typical Sesame Street show affairs. In fact I am pretty sure that the
bulk of this 45 minute DVD were taken from television shows. There is
mild content in Sesame Street Abby and Friends P is for Princess like
someone speaking in such a way that they put spittle in the faces of
other characters. This is done for humor. There is a boy monster who has
a princess dress put on him, and another boy monster kisses a boy
monster ala Snow White.
The first part of Sesame Street Abby and Friends P is for Princess has a
penguin who does not speak English. Her speech irritated me beyond
belief. In fact this is one of the main reasons I feel I did not enjoy
this DVD. There are good lessons like the letter 'P', and how to make
believe. Although I have to ask which kids are having problems with make
believe? None of mine ever did. There is also a theme in Sesame Street
Abby and Friends P is for Princess where women do not really need men.
The prince is shown to be a complete buffoon, and these little girls
solve their problems without him. This attempt at role reversal causes
gender confusion which leads to a plethora of societal issues.
There are some bonus shorts in Sesame Street Abby and Friends P is for
Princess that follow the magical Abby. She has a interesting flying
school. These shorts is where the boy monster kiss another sleeping boy
monster, and a boy monster is put in a dress. Other than those two
incidents it is an interesting little show. There are also previews on
the Sesame Street Abby and Friends P is for Princess DVD.
The menu screens function properly in Sesame Street Abby and Friends P
is for Princess. I had no problems navigating around them. The stories
in Sesame Street Abby and Friends P is for Princess are light on age
appropriate teachings. The letter 'P' is the stand out teaching to me. I
really wish I had fun with this DVD, but even more so I was expecting
children to get into it. Unfortunately they did not get into this DVD
either.
As I started this review, this is the first time I have found a Sesame
Street DVD that I was not into. I expected some good teachings, and one
lesson really rubbed me the wrong way. I would like to see future DVDs
from Sesame Street last a little longer than 45 minutes. We have plenty
of educational DVDs here at Family Friendly Gaming that are also
entertaining that are much longer.
