Pogo Games
SCORE: 86
EA has brought the popular Pogo Games website into the mobile world with the new Pogo Games app available for the iPhone. Players can now enjoy some of their favorite Pogo games while they’re on the go.
This iPhone app provides players with easy access to five popular Pogo favorites. The interface is nice and clean and full of bright colors. Each of the five included games are very colorful and the graphics look crisp. There can be some persistent advertising to deal with unless you become a Club Pogo member, but this is to be expected from a free app.
The sound effects used in each of the games is appropriate and they fit the theme of each game. The audio is pretty basic, so players shouldn’t expect much. The music is extremely limited within the games also. Most feature a small jingle at the beginning of the game and then silence from that point forward. Some background audio would be a nice addition to future updates to this app.
The replay value of the Pogo Games app is fairly high. Each of the five included games can be played repeatedly without getting old due to their arcade nature. There are leaderboads so you can see where your score stands in comparison to other Pogo players. You can also earn ranks if you create a Pogo account. And the app itself is free making it easy for players to check it out and decide if it’s right for them.
The five games that were included in this app at the time of review are: Word Whomp, Turbo 21, Poppit, Sweet Tooth 2, and Mahjong Safari. Word Whomp is a word game where players are given a jumble of letters which they must use to form words. This game features cute little gophers that hold the letters and then pop out of the ground with them when you select them. Turbo 21 is a blackjack style game where you must place randomly drawn cards into four “lanes” and attempt to get the total in each lane up to 21. This is not a gambling game, but the basics of blackjack are used. In Poppit players are given a board full of brightly colored balloons which they must pop in order to release prizes hidden within. When a prize is released you must tilt your iPhone left or right to guide it down to the target at the bottom of the screen. Sweet Tooth 2 falls into the “gem swapping” genre. Players must swap tiles in order to align three or more matching tiles and clear the delicious looking caramels beneath. The tiles feature tasty looking candy treats as opposed to gems found in similar games. Finally Mahjong Safari is the classic game of Mahjong with a small twist. When you match tiles they slide together and then disappear. The catch is that you must have a clear path between the matching tiles so that they can slide properly into place. Each of these games makes good use of the iPhone touch screen and Poppit uses the motion controls creatively allowing you to guide your prizes as they float down. Each of these games were surprisingly fun to play in their own unique way.
At the time of review, this app’s five featured games are all family
friendly and safe for all ages. I would expect that Pogo will likely
release new games into this app periodically. This is something that
parents should keep in mind as new games may appear via updates that
could possibly contain content that was not previously a concern. I
would also caution those with potentially addictive personalities to be
warned of signing up for on-line clubs such as the one Pogo offers. It
can become addicting to play for on-line tokens and other prizes and
when left unchecked can have a real impact on your valuable time and
resources.
