Pocket Creatures
SCORE: 83
I was intrigued by Pocket
Creatures so much that we contacted the PR firm for a reviewable copy. I
had read the press releases, and had some idea what I was getting into.
Pocket Creatures is part Harvest Moon, and part Animal Crossing. You
have a cute little critter that eats, and explores the little area.
Other animals can be used to do things like dig for treasures. Planting
seeds will make the area more green. Tactile Entertainment included
quite a few things to do considering how small the play area is.
The graphics are very bright and colorful in Pocket Creatures. I love
how a rainbow appears when you pet your creature. Slapping your creature
will make it cry, and that produces lightning clouds. I found that I
could fricassee ants into a small pile of ash with lightning. So there
is some cartoon violence in Pocket Creatures.
The music in Pocket Creatures is soothing. I felt a wave of relaxation
while I played this app. Certain special effect sounds (like when the
tablets are closed) did grate on my nerves a bit. The cracking of the
egg sound at the beginning of this app is very realistic. Your creature
develops a personality depending on your actions. This lets the player
express good decisions, or wicked ones.
Pocket Creatures can become very addicting. There are a nice amount of
skills to learn while you play. Treasures are hidden, and this game lets
you plant seeds. Technically it encourages you to plant seeds, but that
is a minor point. This app costs $2.99 (editor: at the time the review
was written), and is worth the price of admission in this reviewers
opinion.
Overall I like the controls in Pocket Creatures. Moving the screen
around with two fingers works flawlessly. Double tapping a spot for your
creature to go to works really well. Picking up and digging with animals
works okay. I had trouble getting animals to drink water so I could
water plants. This was an irritation for me because I was doing what the
app told me to.
How you act in this game is going to determine how moral and ethical you
are. I have never been a fan on games that let people do evil, and
wicked deeds. Pocket Creatures is on the tame side, since you destroy
animals in a Viva Pinata kind of way. Sorry no candy when you destroy
animals in Pocket Creatures. Exploration of this little environment is
the main goal in Pocket Creatures. Some may argue that developing your
creatures personality is another one. Bear in mind this is a large app,
weighing in at 91.1 megs.
