Monkey Madness Island Escape
SCORE: 67
I did not know what to expect from Monkey Madness Island Escape on
the Nintendo DS. Storm City Games was gracious enough to give Family
Friendly Gaming a reviewable copy. I thought it was some kind of monkey
themed puzzle game at first. My thoughts were wrong. Very, very wrong.
Monkey Madness Island Escape is a 3D rail shooter on the Nintendo DS.
Monkeys are the main bad guys and they like to throw things like bananas
at you. Perfectly good bananas they could eat, or share with me and they
would have stayed alive.
My momma told me if you have nothing nice to say, then do not say
nothing at all. If I were to follow that literally I would not have
anything to say in the graphics section. So I will be as tasteful, and
tactful as I can. The graphics are the first thing that stuck out in
Monkey Madness Island Escape. The details are not that great, which has
a lot to do with the limitations of the machine this was put on. Players
shoot the monkeys with a slingshot, water gun, etc. The monkeys try and
hit you. There are a few different enemies that are repeated quite
often. The occasional flying animal shook things up.
The music in Monkey Madness Island Escape is passable. It fits the theme
and keeps things moving. The mild language (editor: as the ESRB denoted)
was not really needed in my opinion. Monkey Madness Island Escape could
have been a much better game without it. Monkey Madness Island Escape
tries to be humorous, but it went away after I got hit with my first
coconut.
The biggest disappointment I have with Monkey Madness Island Escape is
the length of the game. For such a short game I would have expected much
more attention on the graphics. Monkey Madness Island Escape does
contain a multicard download for two players. There are three difficulty
settings and different game play modes. Modern gamers are going to
breeze right through Monkey Madness Island Escape though.
The crux of the game play in Monkey Madness Island Escape is to move the
stylus around on the bottom screen, and press a button to fire. The top
screen shows all of the action, and where your target is located. Due to
the graphics it can be difficult to tell if you hit certain monkeys. I
wound up lowering my accuracy by shooting many times after taking them
down. I did not have fun playing Monkey Madness Island Escape, but I
also did not get annoyed by it. It was somewhere in between. The
controls function well in this hand held game.
Players are trying to escape this monkey infested island. A rail shooter
on the Nintendo DS is an interesting concept. The main lesson I got from
Monkey Madness Island Escape is to get them before they get me. Although
shooting monkeys until they fall down is a little laughable. The thing
with trying new things, is not everything is going to hit the mark. For
me Monkey Madness Island Escape is an interesting idea that is less
violent than any other shooter I have played. Maybe a sequel on the
Nintendo 3DS with better graphics would work better.
