ModNation Racers

We have been very excited to get our hands on ModNation Racers from Sony. So once I was given a reviewable unit I was pretty excited. I had some very high hopes for this kart racing game from Sony. ModNation Racers brings some good change to the genre, and there are some things I am not so pleased with. This game takes the LittleBigPlanet concept to kart racing. That means you (editor: the player) can create your own tracks, vehicles, and characters. Customization is allowed in almost every area of this game.

I was expecting a lot more dazzle in terms of graphics. ModNation Racers looks okay, but not as good as I thought it would. There are a range of various worlds to race in, which contain some nice diversity. ModNation Racers contains cartoon violence as various weapons can be used to stop fellow racers. I noticed certain hits can make a vehicle explode. I noticed parts flying around for a bit. ModNation Racers contains some big air, and drivers can do some cool tricks.

I was really enjoying the music in ModNation Racers, and the game started making comments. They have some harsh comments that did not really fit this Playstation Portable game in my opinion. The special effect sounds are okay in ModNation Racers. I kept coming back to the games comments throughout the race. What they had to say frustrated me, and made me play worse.

ModNation Racers excels in terms of the replay value. There are so many things you can do in this hand held video game that you can easily be kept busy for months. I absolutely love it when a video game lets me make my own tracks, and adapt the game to my personal tastes. Much of the content needs to be unlocked. Up to six players can connect, and play ModNation Racers together.

I had real problems with some of the tracks in ModNation Racers. A few near the beginning are much harder than I was expecting, and this was on the easy mode. They contain some wild twists and turns that made me feel dizzy. Which is the first time I have had that problem in a kart racing game. ModNation Racers includes various ways to play (straight racing, with weapons, and last kart standing) that will entertain racing fans. There is also a career mode, and connectivity to the Playstation 3 version.

The announcers comments is the only issue I can see families will have with ModNation Racers. I would not want my grandchildren exhibiting such attitudes to me, or their parents. The violence is quick in this PSP game. I would like to sequels to ModNation Racers in the near future. I like the idea of the modding of a kart racing game. A few improvements to this franchise and it will give Mario Kart a run for the money.
