ModNation Racers

When I think about ModNation Racers on the Playstation 3 (PS3) I think community. Sony has done an amazing job building a kart racing game that incorporates community. Players can see what their fellow gamers have come up with in terms of content. I have a feeling that the kart racing genre will grow thanks to this innovation. Sony has learned that gamers are a creative bunch, and giving us the ability to make our own content increases the longevity of a franchise.

ModNation Racers is absolutely beautiful. The graphics have a level of polish and shine that impresses me. Since this is a kart racing title, you can expect to see missiles, lightning bolts and other explosive attacks. I like how ModNation Racers lets you level up the power ups by getting them back to back without using them. I noticed when my kart took major damage there were pieces of it flying around. My poor driver was holding on for dear life in what was left.

The humor in ModNation Racers is hit or miss. I found myself laughing at some of the announcers commentary. Other parts of the commentary felt like they were trying to force humor. A few people watching me play commented on various mean spirited, and bad attitude comments by one of the announcers. The crew chief has comments that are on the rough side at times as well. The music in ModNation Racers is really good, and fits the theme of this title.

Being able to create your own drivers, karts, and race tracks take this PS3 game a long way. As if that were not enough twelve gamers can race one another in this game. That is in the online mode, so an internet connection is needed. The twenty five race tracks may seem light until you realize you can make your own, and/or try out creations from others. ModNation Racers contains quite a bit of unlockable content for those who do not want to do it for themselves.

It took me a couple of races to get used to the controls in ModNation Racers. Once I did I was dominating - well most of the time anyways. My main complaint about ModNation Racers is the loading screens. There are too many loading screens, and they take too long. This really breaks up the flow of this game, and wound up frustrating me. Being able to create, and the races are a lot of fun though.

ModNation Racers teaches a couple of lessons. The first one is to get the finish line first by any means necessary. Finding the hidden paths, and speed bursts will go a long way to coming in first. The next major lesson in ModNation Racers is to exercise your creativity. The final lesson is to compete against others. Parents need to keep in mind that with peripherals like the Headset their children can be exposed to things they may not approve of. I am very curious to see how Sony progresses this franchise in the future.
