Madden NFL 06

I have enjoyed going back and playing sports games from a few years ago. It is neat to see how the franchise as progressed over the years. The Madden series is well known, and has way more good than bad years. I find the PSP (Playstation Portable) versions to be the best football on the hand held systems. How did Madden NFL 06 stack up? Come with me on this magical mystery tour of a football Goliath on the hand held David.

Graphically Madden NFL 06 looks like a football game. In a lot of ways the visuals remind me of what we saw on the 32-bit home console systems. Players look like players, and the fields look very authentic. The fans do not look the greatest, and there are some parts of the sideline that looked bare to me. Football involves tackling so there is some violence in that regard. If you can stomach a real life football game, then you will have no issues with Madden NFL 06 on the PSP. In fact the tackling is much tamer in this game than the real thing.

This was a bad year for the music in my opinion. Madden NFL 06 is also choppy thanks to the numerous loading screens. The commentators do a good job with keeping up with the action. There are times when their comments are straight sound bytes and that can get annoying. Other comments did not fit the situation.

Four players can compete together thanks to the Wireless and Online modes. Madden NFL 06 also contains connectivity to the Playstation 2 (editor: franchise mode). There are eighteen mini games within Madden NFL 06, and ten of them are exclusive to this version of the game. The Assistant Coach mode is an interesting one for those looking for a little bit different kind of football action. I found this game used for a very good price, and feel my money was well spent.

Madden NFL 06 controls like almost every other Madden NFL game from the past. Picking plays is the standard menu screen, and specific buttons are used for action. The kicking is the gauge where the player must press a couple of times. I ran into no control issues while playing Madden NFL 06. The loading times is my one complaint. They were long, and kept happening. Trying to play on the go was a pain because of the load times.

Madden NFL 06 was a solid year for the franchise on the PSP. Lord willing I will check out later years (Madden NFL 07 has already been reviewed). Football fans who have a PSP, and are patient will find a fun video game that is safe for the entire family. Kids may need help with what plays to pick though.
