Kung Fu Funk

There are some video games that make me laugh just by thinking about them. Kung Fu Funk is one of those video games. This WiiWare title is based on the 70s Kung Fu movies. There are a series of mini games that will have you smiling (editor: at the very least) while you are playing them. Catching flies with chopsticks, and singing yaks are a few of the stand out mini games.

Graphically speaking there is a specific style to this game. The characters look very similar to what they did in those movies. My main disappointment is there is not a lot of animation. The characters look like they were cut out of a magazine and pasted onto the backgrounds. Like I said a specific style to Kung Fu Funk. There is some violence in some of the mini games. The majority do not contain violence though.

There is a reason the sound section receives the highest score in Kung Fu Funk. I was laughing so much I wound up waking up our children after they had gone to bed. Older members of the family (and/or those exposed to older Kung Fu movies) will appreciate the humor in Kung Fu Funk. I did not find any offensive language while playing Kung Fu Funk.

There are enough mini games for the 500 Wii Points price point in my opinion. The game is separated out into three game modes, and you will be practicing a few before mastering them. Four family members can enjoy Kung Fu Funk at the same time, and that is always appreciated here at Family Friendly Gaming. Additional unlockable content would have been nice, but it does not hurt this game.

I appreciate how Kung Fu Funk teaches the player how to play each mini game via visual instructions. I had a lot of fun playing this Wii game, as did others who played with me. We did run into times here and there that the game would not recognize our controller movements. This would frustrate us, but the frequency was pretty low.

I love the ingenuity, and creativity behind Kung Fu Funk. Stickmen Studios took something from the past that has been tongue and cheek, and ran with it. Families should be aware of the E10+ rating because there is some violence in this game. I wish they would have had that mini game control differently personally. I can see this game becoming a franchise with sequels in the future.
