Excitebots Trick Racing

The WMG saw Excitebots Trick Racing for sale on Black Friday, and checked to make sure it had not already been reviewed. For some odd reason Nintendo had quietly released this sequel (of sorts) to Excite Truck. When Family Friendly Gaming does not report on a game, it is always reason for caution. After reading this review, you will know whether or not you should spend your money on this Wii game. The vehicles are part robot, part vehicle, and they look like animals. Things like frogs, and ladybugs. The WMG thinks someone was taking too many happy pills when they designed this video game.

Visually speaking Excitebots Trick Racing is a big disappointment. The graphics are blurred so often that it is difficult to get a feel for them. Unless of course you purposely go slow to take a look. In which case you will not be impressed. The animal theme is cool for the vehicles at first. Then you run into a tree or something, and you feel bad for the poor little critter. Weapons can be picked up to hurt the other racers, which is the second highest portion of the violence in Excitebots Trick Racing.

The WMG did not enjoy the music in Excitebots Trick Racing. There are special effect sounds in this Wii game that this reviewer found to be annoying. If you are going to put animal themes in a game Nintendo, then use some of their sounds in the game. The saving grace in this section is there is no offensive sounds or words.

Nintendo included a dizzying array of unlockables. Problem is it takes forever to earn enough points for most of them. Which in this reviewer’s eyes makes them pretty pointless. If that were not enough there is a poker mode. Poker and a racing game do not mix well. Two players can compete in this game, and there is also an online mode (editor: for those into that kind of thing).

The controls in Excitebots Trick Racing are strange. At times they are really loose, and others they are very forgiving. The whole flow of this racing game is whack. Rush through at turbo, fly through the air, and do tricks. Then all of a sudden, like hitting a brick wall, you have to do specific Wii Remote motions to progress. This destroys the flow, and the game for this reviewer.

Most racing games teach the player to get to the finish line first. Excitebots Trick Racing has that element but players can also beat a race by doing enough tricks in a level. You will have to be really good to do that though. The WMG thought Excitebots Trick Racing would be fun, but wound up being wrong.
