SCORE: 77

Eternal Sonata

Eternal Sonata is a musical based role playing game with some interesting features. This game appears on the Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 (editor: the PS3 version was used for this review). Namco Bandai allowed a lot of social commentary on an array of issues. This will make players happy or unhappy depending on their positions on these social issues as well. One of the most adult issues in Eternal Sonata deals with suicide. So the rating should be enforced in your family at a minimum. On the positive side of the aisle the pastor in the church tells the player: “God be with you.” This is quite an improvement for the role playing game genre.

There is a real dream like state to the visuals of Eternal Sonata. Which makes a lot of sense because the entire game is supposed to be a dream of a dying man. The majority of the characters have a real flair and style in their attire. The majority of them also dress appropriately. Eternal Sonata contains a lot of violence as the player slashes through the enemies. Most of the enemies look like some form of weird monsters that are usually animal like.

Eternal Sonata has some of the best music this review has ever heard in a video game. The classical, and traditional sounds are orchestra quality. God is referenced, but so is a goddess in regards. There is also an issue with some of the language which detracts tremendously from this section.

The RPG Master enjoys role playing games because there is more play value for the dollar. Eternal Sonata is no exception as there is a lengthy storyline to play through. Hidden items, and costumes are also included in this role playing video game.

Eternal Sonata includes an immersive system of game play that has to be payed attention to. There are a few places where the player can get stuck and ultimately frustrated. Leveling up is important, but learning the game play system is even more important. The hacking and slashing enemies during the fighting sections can get boring, otherwise there is some fun to be found in Eternal Sonata.

The best way to view Eternal Sonata is as a video game for adults. This reviewer does not agree with many of the opinions included in this game, however they can spark conversation. Hopefully fellow role playing gamers will think about the topics, and not just accept every opinion in this game as their own. The musical aspect of this game is fantastic.
