Doras Big Birthday Adventures

Dora's Big Birthday Adventures continues a fantastic franchise on the Nintendo DS. My five year old son can not play many games on the Nintendo DS. He can play quite a few games on the iPod Touch. It is really great to see 2K Play spending the time to create quality kids games on the DS. Too many publishers throw a game out there for kids and ignore some of the simple small things. 2K Play actually uses real children to test their games. How does Family Friendly Gaming know that? We also have children play the games. And they have a logo on the box.

The visuals in Dora's Big Birthday Adventures are very bright and colorful. This hand held game contains some education in colors by having the players match colors in certain mini games. There is a witch who flies around and generally causes trouble for Dora and Boots. Players are rewarded with a new visual after completing Dora's Big Birthday Adventures. I noticed some new animations to Dora when she dances around.

Expect classic Dora the Explorer sounds in Dora's Big Birthday Adventures. Dora speaks to the players, and encourages them to respond with certain words. Parents need not be concerned because I tested many different words and it let us past. Dora counts in Spanish while the kids are moving past obstacles. She also teaches certain words like: "Amigo" as well. Certain areas of Dora's Big Birthday Adventures require the child to blow into the Nintendo DS microphone. Speaking can also work in this area.

Dora's Big Birthday Adventures contains essentially one episode. She uses the map, and backpack at certain points. Boots has a pretty small role in this game. Each of the mini games are replayable. There is some diversity in these games, so there should be something you child likes. Dora gets a new outfit when the game is completed. Aside from that there is not a lot of unlockable content.

Can a child play Dora's Big Birthday Adventures? The answer to that question is yes. Dora's Big Birthday Adventures is forgiving enough that even if they do the wrong thing they are encouraged to the right choice. In fact when you select the wrong answer, the right one starts to sparkle. The only concern I have with Dora's Big Birthday Adventures is the length of the game.

Dora's Big Birthday Adventures shows something we have known for a very long time - kids games can be entertaining and educational at the same time. Families can be assured that they can safely leave their children with this Nintendo DS game. I hope to see future games in this franchise. I would really like to see one include multiple episodes on one cartridge. I will be recommending Dora's Big Birthday Adventures to families that have children in the appropriate age range.
