Big League Sports Summer

The WMG loves finding deals. Big League Sports Summer is a Nintendo DS video game that the WMG found for under ten dollars. The WMG should have been suspicious when it was discovered this game was released this year (editor: 2009). Activision is a well known publisher so the WMG had hopes that Big League Sports Summer would be okay. This hand held video game is essentially a few mini games based on various sports. Throw the football to receivers as they are inside areas that grant points, or avoid being tagged in a runoff in baseball. There are a couple of interesting mini games here, but do not think you are actually getting any real sports.

Big League Sports Summer has a fantastic intro video that got me all pumped up. The WMG was ready for some great sports action. Sadly, the graphics took a dive right after that. Many of the graphics are small, and the details are absolutely atrocious. Big League Sports Summer does use a few fun colors here and there. The golf target practice mini game is a good example of this. Cartoon violence consists of things like getting tackled, or having a bomb blow up in the face of a character.

The music during the intro of Big League Sports Summer is part of what got this reviewer all excited. Again it was downhill from there. The music enters a stealth mode after that. It did nothing for the WMG after the intro, and having to hear certain sounds over and over again (wait for the game play section) became a nuisance. The coach character seems a little mean to the WMG as well.

Mini game compilations live and die on a couple of things. First off, are the mini games fun. Secondly are they easy to learn and control. Finally, are there enough of them. Big League Sports Summer fails on almost every single one of those. There is one or two of the mini games that could be considered fun for a very short time. The controls do not always make much sense. There are not enough mini games to keep gamers of any sort interested for long. Big League Sports Summer can be found for a very small amount of money. You would be wise to save your money for a better product though.

The game play is the worst part of Big League Sports Summer. Most of the mini games control the same way. Flick towards something. At this point there is little reason to have any different sports. This gets worse when one tries to actually control them. Changing directions in the baseball base stealing game can be frustrating beyond belief. The saving grace of this game is there are a few moments of pleasure in a couple of the games.

Big League Sports Summer could have been a really good game on the Nintendo DS. There could have been lessons about being a good sport, striving for athletic achievements, and so much more. Activision missed an opportunity.
