Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers

I have always liked the arcade sports titles. There is something so much fun about playing game that does not take itself too seriously. Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers entered Family Friendly Gaming thanks to our friends over at Atari. Sometimes the Nintendo DS versions are great for these kinds of games, and other times they are not so great. So I tentatively put Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers in my Nintendo DSi hoping for the best.

Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers is not the best looking Nintendo DS game out there. In fact I have watched quite a few of the videos, and they are all of the console versions. With that said there are some neat looking baseball fields in this hand held video game. The characters have a little to be desired. The special effects in this game look better than I was expecting. Effects like the bat on fire are a good example. Characters can fall down if they connect with special attacks/defenses.

The audio of Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers really shines. I enjoyed listening to the announcers give humorous comments throughout the game. Their participation in Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers is one of the things that makes this DS game rise above many others. The music is decent, and also brings something to the table.

Most arcade sports games are really lacking in terms of the extras. I was shocked to see how many different modes that are in Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers. The coolest mode is a home run mode. At Family Friendly Gaming we have been requesting that in other arcade baseball games, and are pleased to see Atari included. Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers also contains multiple options in how the game is played. This game is not at the level of a baseball of simulation, but much more than most arcade titles.

Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers has two main control schemes. There is the touch screen controls, and buttons. I found a combination of the two works best. I had real problems batting using just touch screen controls. When I used the buttons to bat, I did a whole lot better. Now when it comes to pitching, I found the touch screen controls worked the best. Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers is realistic by having batters chase bad pitches, and watch good pitches go by.

Families will be most interested in the special powers in Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers. There are things like the booger ball that will splat green stuff on the screen to block the batters view. That is as bad as the content gets in Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers. I did not have an issue with these tongue in cheek special powers. Pitchers also have special powers they can use. The main concepts of standing up to bullies, and how baseball is played are two of the lessons kids can learn from Backyard Sports Sandlot Sluggers. I believe that many adults will enjoy this game as well.
