Adventure Island The Beginning

Back in the day the WMG loved the Adventure Island games. So when Adventure Island The Beginning came out on WiiWare (downloadable games on the Wii), the WMG decided to take a trip down memory lane. Adventure Island The Beginning is a definite upgrade from the previous games, but there has been a lot of time to pass. The video game industry has moved on in many ways, and having a character that constantly loses their health is annoying. Sure there is a lot of fruit to collect (that replenishes the health), but that means the player has to keep collecting the fruit to stay alive. This leads to a real monotonous, and stressful video game experience. Just wait for the WMG to get into the control issues.

There are a lot of colors used in Adventure Island The Beginning. In fact the old color swapping technique is used on the animals that get in the players way. The animation feels a little stiff, and the 3D graphic in the mini games needs some work. In fact those mini games look like they were done on the Nintendo 64, not the Wii. The player uses weapons to take out the animals. Characters in this Wii game do not wear a lot of clothes.

The music in Adventure Island The Beginning gets really repetitive. So it is a good thing the WMG enjoyed the music in this game. The sound when a player dies (which is quite often), does get extremely annoying. The player’s goal is to save their girlfriend from the bad guy. Adventure Island The Beginning is more about action, and less about a story though.

The main replay gamers will get from Adventure Island The Beginning is trying to beat the same level. This is a difficult, annoying, and frustrating video game. If you want that kind of a game you will find your money well spent. The WMG does not feel the money was spent well.

What is with these controls? The WMG tried all the various control schemes, and the game just decides to have you die at certain times. There is no better way to explain the control problems in Adventure Island The Beginning. Sometimes a normal jump goes over a large chasm, and others a running jump. Try to run and jump, and many times your character will fall off the ledge and not jump at all.

Adventure Island The Beginning has the hero saving the girl who has been kidnapped. This is good in the WMG’s opinion, even if violence is the solution to the problem.
