ATV Fever

Storm City Games is known for developing inexpensive games for quick, easy pick up and play experiences. The games can be hit or miss, some much better than others. With ATV Fever for the DS, Storm City Games has developed a fun and exciting game that will keep young and old gamers coming back for another lap. ATV Fever is officially licensed by Honda and features 9 actual ATV’s made by Honda. Gamers can participate in Arcade style racing, which has time limits at checkpoints. Also available is a Championship mode for both Utility and Sport ATV’s. And lastly, the gamers can do races against computer competition without the time restrictions. All in all, there are over 50 different events to choose from (once they are all unlocked). The race events pit the game against 5 computer-controlled riders.

To make the game more challenging and keep the gamer coming back, only the Utility ATV’s are available to start. Of course gamers want to get to the sporty Honda ATV’s, so they will have to unlock them. Each class contains multiple models with different color schemes available. I especially liked how the ATV’s selection menu contains actual photos of the ATV’s. Speaking of menus, the game menu screen is easy to navigate by going left and right using the directional pad. There is an Options screen, but only the sounds and effects volumes can be edited.

Graphically speaking, ATV Fever was a nice surprise. Considering the on screen action and the background environments ATV Fever holds its own in the racing genre for the Nintendo DS. I first thought the whole bottom screen being the track map was a bit too much, but after playing for a while I found myself glad the map was so large and easy to grasp. The controls are easy to learn (A button for gas and left/right direction pad) and can be mastered after only a few races.

ATV Fever is a joy to play. I found myself not wanting to put it down. With the quick load times, easy controls and adequate graphics this could be a favorite for young and old gamers on the go. Even non-ATV fans could find this entertaining. I would recommend ATV to any family looking for fun titles on the DS. Parents can discuss competition and good sportsmanship when playing ATV Fever with their children. I look forward to what else Storm City Games can offer kids of all ages.
