Tom and Jerry Tales

I loved watching Tom and Jerry as a kid. I would cheer everytime the cat would catch that ever so annoying mouse. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment decided players of all ages could enjoy Tom and Jerry Tales on the Nintendo DS. This video game tries to capture the feel of the chase, but you have to be the mouse. Once I got over that disappointment I had to realize that Sensory Sweep Studios pretty much is trying to capitalize on the license. Specific levels have to be replayed multiple times trying to achieve different things. If the levels were broad and expansive 3D levels that would be digestible, but they are running in one direction with a little wiggle room left and right.

The graphics are not very polished, and there is little variety in what the player has to do. There is cartoon violence as the mouse Jerry gets Tom hit by a wide array of different things.

The sounds are only marginally better in Tom and Jerry Tales than the graphics. There is some music, and occasionally it goes along with the theme of this Nintendo DS video game. More often than not it is very forgettable. Which does not make a lot of sense since music from the television show should have been available.

The levels can be replayed for different things in order to progress in Tom and Jerry Tales. Jerry gets to build his furniture collection in the hole in the wall for any of those interested. Do not expect anything near the level of Animal Crossing though. I would advise the reader to avoid this Nintendo DS video game.

The one area of variety in Tom and Jerry Tales is playing mini games on the touch screen. The problem is the player has to quickly move off the control pad, and over to the touch screen, and then back again. This leads to problems when the game is expecting the player to be going very fast in order to avoid the cat. Certain levels are timed, and getting that perfect time means no mistakes whatsoever. I did not have fun playing Tom and Jerry Tales on the Nintendo DS.

I really wanted to like Tom and Jerry Tales. I had such high hopes for this Nintendo DS video game, and Warner Bros. Entertainment dashed those hopes up against a sea wall. Cats chase mice, and generally in real life catch them. This video game exhibits a role reversal that is also in the cartoon. If anything I have taken the time to acknowledge that truth. No sequels to Tom and Jerry Tales are needed. Cars on the DS would be a better choice.
