To Catch a Thief

Cary Grant and Grace Kelly headline in To Catch a Thief. Cary Grant is an ex-thief who has gone clean. Robberies start to occur with his old signature style. He claims to be innocent, however the police come after him. In order to prove his innocence he must avoid the police, and find the real thief. Without spoiling anything in this movie, the viewer spends most of the movie wondering if he is thief, or if someone else is. This two disc DVD set is part of the Paramount Centennial Collection. The acting in To Catch a Thief is top notch. Alfred Hitchcock directs this 1955 mystery thriller.

The French Riviera looks great in To Catch a Thief. The roof tops exhibit a bygone era. The suits, and dresses also have a historic element to them. People in To Catch a Thief generally act more civil, polite, and respectful to one another, even the police to criminal relationships are respectful. The usage of the blue screen is pretty easy to spot in this Technicolor movie. There are some women in swimsuits, and some lingering on a woman’s cleavage from the above angle.

To Catch a Thief has some music that fits the theme perfectly. Some of the dialog seems a little corny to me personally. A lot of the dialog had me guessing to who the real cat burglar was. I enjoyed the ending, and decided to not spoil it for any of our readers. The love story that is underlying the story will appeal to women.

An entire disc of extras is included in this package. I was not big on the film censorship extra included but that may just be me. I do appreciate all of the background content included in the special features section. Once the mystery is solved it will take most viewers some time to want to watch it again. If you are into older films, or the work of Cary Grant then check this DVD out.

To Catch a Thief functions exactly as I would expect it to. I found no problems in this section. The background screens are a little sparse, but then that goes along with the era this movie came from. The story drew me in, and honestly had me guessing right up until the end.

To Catch a Thief teaches some lessons about doing the right thing, and working hard to achieve success. It also shows how hard it can be to change ones image. There are also unsavory acts in this movie like murder. Theft is the general theme, thankfully the movie is about stopping it. The theme of this movie has been used multiple times since then, and it almost always works.
