The Reluctant Dragon
SCORE: 87
Walt Disney Animation Collection Volume 6 is the Reluctant Dragon. The four cartoons on this 62 minute DVD are The Reluctant Dragon, Goliath II, Ferdinand The Bull, and Johnny Appleseed. This is an exceptional compilation filled with wonderful lessons. Not everything you have been trained to destroy is worthy of destruction, you can save the day no matter how small you are, and following God’s will for your life. The last one came as quite a pleasant surprise.
The song in Johnny Appleseed about thanking the Lord got me very excited indeed. Not only are the sounds exceptional in that cartoon there are some awesome images as well. Johnny Appleseed has a guardian angel, and carries the Holy Bible wherever he went. He made friends with the animals and lives in harmony with nature. The concept of planting apple trees all over the place resonated with my green thumb.
The Reluctant Dragon is the headliner on this DVD, but in my opinion takes second seat to Johnny Appleseed. The extras are limited to a Litho print, and sneak peak previews. The menu screens are set up properly. Something about these cartoons is how civil the characters are to each other. A bad tiger gets eaten by a crocodile, but winds up jump out of his mouth later.
Goliath the little elephant gets into a fight with a mouse, but the
cartoon violence is generally more like wrestling. Children I had watch
The Reluctant Dragon were very engaged. They also asked quite a few
questions about dragons, elephants, and the history behind Johnny
Appleseed.
