The Odd Couple

One of the funniest movies of all time is being released as a collector’s edition boxed set  - Centennial Collection - from Paramount Studios Home Entertainment on March 24th. The Odd Couple is listed on the AFI (American Film Institute) “100 Years 100 Laughs” as the 17th funniest movie of all time. This all-time funny film is about two people who do not fit together, but have to live together.

This classic, written by Neil Simmon, stars Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau at their very best. Felix (Lemmon) is an clean freak and Oscar (Matthau) is his sloppy room mate. Felix, recently separated from his wife, tries several times to kill himself but is unsuccesful each time. Felix then finds himself living with Oscar, and the laughs begin in full force. The story then follows the two as they adjust to life with each other and how the two men deal with various circumstances of day to day life.

The collector’s edition DVD boxed set contains 2 dics loaded with special features. The first disc contains the film and an optional audio commentary from Charlie Matthau and Chris Lemmon. The second disc includes a featurette about the original idea for the movie. Also included on the second dics is a look at Matthau and Lemmon acting together, some memories from the set, the making of the film, a featurette about the classic status of this movie and much more.

The Odd Couple is not just a hilarious movie, but also an incredible artistic performance from all involved in it’s production. This classic film was nominated for 2 Oscars.

The movie is rated G, which was surprising due to some of the content and language. There were some moments that I would not recommend for young children - a bar scene during the opening credits and some adult references and language. For this reason, it is recommended that if children or young teens are watching, parents should be prepared to answer questions relating to such topics. This is not a movie I would let my children watch unsupervised. I would have preferred a PG rating.

Overall, this is a good film and a must have for all movie fans!
- Alan
