The Best of RiffTrax Shorts Volume 1 Volume 2

From the creative minds that brought us Mystery Science Theater 3000 comes a new forum for movie commentary - RiffTrax. RiffMaster Michael J. Nelson partners with old friends Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett to riff on movies. RiffTrax are comedic MP3 tracks to play along with your favorite DVDs. Also available are RiffTrax Shorts (DVD), which are riffs on various shorts from any genre of movies.

RiffTrax: The Best of RiffTrax Shorts: Volume I and II are collections of original short riffs. The shorts include safety videos, instructional videos and more. The format of the shorts is much like Mystery Science Theater 3000, where the commentary makes fun of the film - just without the character shadows on the bottom of the screen. One of the promotional lines on the DVDs is, "It's like watching a movie with your funniest friends." However, the riffs are never that interesting and are too often inappropriate to even enjoy - with or without your friends.

The riffs often included cursing, crude humor, drug and alcohol references, and inappropriate sexual references. The commentary seems unoriginal, forced, and at times does not even seem to flow with the short film; leaving the viewer wondering what their RiffTrax "friends" are even referring too.

If you want to get together and watch a movie with some friends, I suggest inviting some of your real friends over. I am certain there would be many more laughs and the experience would be much more pleasant.  In some cases, families can watch and learn from movies that may not necessarily be family friendly - these would not fit that category. The viewer would be hard pressed to find relevant issues to discuss as a family.

Unless you were a HUGE fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000, I would definitely pass on RiffTrax: The Best of RiffTrax Shorts: Volume I and II. Here's hoping they can improve on the content of their riffs and provide some material that would be more family friendly.
