Super Why Jack and the Beanstalk and other fairytale adventures
SCORE: 80
Children shows have come a long way in recent years. PBS has long time been known for some good children’s programming with shows like Sesame Street. There has been controversy over some content on PBS, so I kept an eye out for it while reviewing Super Why Jack and the Beanstalk and other fairytale adventures. These characters teaching the alphabet, reading, and certain sounds (like words that end with all). They also help a character out with problems that most pre-schoolers face. Super Why Jack and the Beanstalk and other fairytale adventures contain four well known children's stories. The strange thing is the characters redefine the stories to completely change them.
There are a lot of different colors used in Super Why Jack and the Beanstalk and other fairytale adventures. Most of the images are kept friendly as well. The big bad wolf will not frighten children at all. How he blows down the pigs houses is done in a comical way. The graphics receive a downgrade when the characters go inside a storybook, but that is to be expected. The big heads and big eyes of the characters is an interesting artistic approach.
Super Why Jack and the Beanstalk and other fairytale adventures has some wonderful teaching of things like the alphabet, and reading. I had children in the target age range watch this DVD, and they were not impressed. They would participate briefly, and then move on. A few even asked to watch something else (VeggieTales). I did not hear any offensive language on this DVD.
I wish there were more than four episodes on this DVD. Super Why Jack and the Beanstalk and other fairytale adventures does contain some extras like printable coloring pages, interactive games, and sing along music videos. Many of the extras require a computer.
There are approximately 100 minutes of content on Super Why Jack and the Beanstalk and other fairytale adventures. I had one irritation with menu screens and that is having to see certain advertisements at the beginning (meaning the menu and skip buttons did not work). Aside from that there is a nice layout of the screens.
I like how Super Why Jack and the Beanstalk and other fairytale
adventures teaches reading, certain words, and the alphabet. Some of the
solutions to problems are questionable. For example one character goes
around destroying stuff. The solution is to be their friend. I can
attest from real life experiences that that solution does not always
work. In fact I have never seen it work.
