Super Paper Mario

Nintendo went a fascinating direction with Super Paper Mario. This is not a true role playing game, but it is also not a true action adventure video game either. It is sort of a hybrid of both with a dimensional twist. All of the game levels are played in the 2D/3D side scrolling action. Certain items must be found, characters must be interrogated, and skills used. There is also a storyline associated with Princess Peach getting kidnapped, and the end of all worlds. Mario must team up with friends, old foes, and take on the evil Count Bleck.

I am luke warm on the graphics in Super Paper Mario. There are levels that look really nice, and some levels that are very poorly done. The attempt for a retro look on some comes across too pixilated. The 3D look is nice, except Mario (editor: and company) stay in 2D. It would have been awesome if the developer Intelligent Systems would have included a 3D look for the characters when they went into 3D. The special effects are exceptional in the graphical department.

The music in Super Paper Mario is really cool. There are a lot of classical and traditional sounds in this Nintendo Wii disc. There is unfortunately an issue in this department as well. There are some very un-needed words in Super Paper Mario. They do not add to the game, and detract.

The biggest problem with Super Paper Mario is the length of the game. It can be beaten by most players in a long weekend. There are plenty of unlockable items, but few of them are needed. I also feel it would be worth a rental, but certainly not worth fifty dollars. At most it would be worth twenty dollars.

The 2D to 3D game play mechanic works beautifully. It may not look pretty, but it certain adds a neat way to hide things in plain view. Super Paper Mario is a real fun game to play. The only drawback I have in this section is how often characters, and Pixl’s (characters that give special skills) have to be swapped in order to progress.

Super Paper Mario has a fortune teller who guides the player for a nominal fee if you forget what needs to be done next. Hints are welcome, but not from such a character. Mario is fighting to save all the worlds, and that reminds me of Christ. I would love to see a sequel especially if the problematic issues are corrected.
