Space Buddies

Space Buddies is another sequel in the well known Disney canine franchise.  Buddha, Budderball, Rosebud, B-Dawg, and Mudbud return for the out of this world adventure.  Each of the golden retriever puppies are as cute as can be, and their names fit their personalities. Mudbud likes to get dirty, Buddha is the Buddhist, Rosebud is the girl, Budderball is obsessed with eating, and B-Dawg talks like a rapper. The puppies get on a space ship on its test run to the moon. Kids will find a lot of entertainment in this movie. If you scrutinize the storyline too deeply you will find problems.

The puppies are adorable, and seeing them in space suits is unique. There are images of Buddha, pulling the paw (for flatulence), and peril. The puppies on the moon is a nice shot, although the moon's gravity was not immediately apparent. I enjoyed the emotions of the humans as they were concerned for the well being of their pets.

Space Buddies has a lot of humor in it based on the personalities of the puppies. The gaseous jokes, and Buddhist content could have been left at the door in my opinion. The music video included has a catchy tune and the girl singing is dressed appropriately. The bad guy (also the same actor from Underdog) is never too horrible.

Disney included a nice amount of extras on the Space Buddies DVD. The bloopers, music video, previews, and of course Backstage Disney round this section out. Dealing with animals I expected many of the different out takes. Children we let watch Space Buddies had a mixed reaction. There were the younger set (three to five) who loved to watch the puppies. Getting into the six to eight year olds, they were less thrilled with Space Buddies. That age group and higher was more interested in Alyson Stoner's "Dancing in the Moonlight" song.

Space Buddies continues Disney's FastPlay tradition, and keeps the menu layouts simple. I had no problem navigating the different menu screens. Space Buddies is a fantastic adventure story that is not something I would ever expect to happen. Companies may launch ships to the moon as a tourist attraction, but I expect it to be very expensive.

Space Buddies is one of those franchises that re-invents itself each time, and gets more amazing with each adventure. Their different personalities  have an occasional clash, however they are always working together. I like how the puppies help one another, and dispel rumors (like aliens). A cute little DVD that fans of the franchise will relish for years to come.
