SimAnimals Africa

There are video games that really defy common logic, understanding, and definition of what a video game is. SimAnimals Africa is one such game, and I feel very honored to be able to play it. Players befriend, take care of, and control various animals. There are missions that need to be done like planting a tree, or filling an empty pond. SimAnimals Africa also keeps it real by having predators eat prey. So if you are controlling a zebra, keep them away from the lions, alligators, etc. There is also a layer of playfulness in SimAnimals Africa that sticks out in a way I really appreciate.

Visually SimAnimals Africa is very family friendly. The art work of the animals is fun, fresh, and happy. The down side is getting your animal eaten be a predator. Adults will want to explain this aspect of life to their children. I have had to, and my kids did not like their animal getting eaten, but they understood to be more careful in the future. There are animal totems, and some magical rocks that need to be powered up (by helping the animals).

SimAnimals Africa teaches children various facts about animals. I love to see stuff like that in mainstream video games. EA has done families a service by including such information. There is also a mythology in this game about humans and animals. The tone of this game is slightly towards the dreaded “green” movement. I caught a comment here or there in the game, but nothing too bad.

There are enough levels in SimAnimals Africa to keep children busy for weeks. Plenty of animals to interact with, and various modes/mini games to play. Only one player can play this game at a time, so that was a bit of downer. A split screen competitive mode would have been nice.

I can see a lot of wonderful applications for SimAnimals Africa. Children can learn to care for (in a general sense) animals, and how to improve the world around them (again in the general sense). The controls are good in SimAnimals Africa. The game explains them, and they are very simple to pick up. I had fun playing SimAnimals Africa, and so did children I let play it.

You should know by now what this game teaches from previous comments in my review. SimAnimals Africa is a cute little title that is overwhelmingly safe for the entire family. There are a few things like the totems, and environmentalism that may raise an eyebrow in some families. It is my job to point them out.
