Return from Witch Mountain

Return from Witch Mountain is the sequel to Escape to Witch Mountain. The brother and sister combination of Tony and Tia return. They are being given some time in the big city to see some of the wonders of mankind. The children have aged a bit, which comes from this movie being released in the year of our Lord 1978. Things go drastically wrong when Tony saves a man’s life. A mad scientist type of character sees the matter manipulation, drugs Tony, and kidnaps him. Normally doing such a thing would be a mistake knowing the powers Tony and Tia have. The mad scientist (played by Christopher Lee) has a way of controlling someone’s mind. Thus they use Tony for their evil schemes. Tia meets up with a gang of kids who help her find her brother.

The majority of Return from Witch Mountain is city scenery. I was not very impressed with this personally. There is a scene where the young boy has his shirt off much longer than I would have liked. There are a lot of psychic kind of scenes where the aliens use their powers to perform good or evil acts.

I was a little surprised at some of the language in Return from Witch Mountain. The cab driver is the major offender with words like dumb. His selfish attitude while driving is also a poor example. The music is classic 1970 sounds that remind me not so fondly of that era. I love how Tia works so hard to get her brother back. I just wish she had gotten adults from her people involved with the problem.

Disney included a spaceship load of extra content on this DVD. This ranges from a lost interview to a making of feature. For those of us interested in commentary there is also an audio commentary included. The pop up fun facts also add a lot to the experience of Return from Witch Mountain on DVD.

Disney has the intelligent design of DVD menu screens down. Return from Witch Mountain functions exactly as I would expect it to. There is a traditional classic feel to it, mixed in with the sci-fi flare from the 1970s. I have seen both of this films, and honestly feel like this movie is not as much fun as the first one.

Return from Witch Mountain feels more like an excuse to have a sequel than a really well thought out sequel idea. I would have found them practicing restraint much more interesting. I know for certain some of our readers are going to bothered with certain content on this DVD.
