Puffins Island Adventure

Puffins Island Adventure is a Nintendo DS video game based on the seabirds. Yes you read that right, this entire video game is based on the real life animal. Breaking Puffins Island Adventure down to its essentials it is part mini game compilation, and part educational. I found the educational portion to be a little light, but that is fine because Puffins are not my favorite bird (editor: apologies to our family and friends in Canada). This DS game explains that main area where the player walks around (or flies from target stone to target stone) finding birds with certain color circles around them. A light blue circle will open up an event with a purple circle. The gold circle will require a task to open a new area.

The various mini game in Puffins Island Adventure have some nice graphics. A few of them are not the greatest though. The main area tries to be ambitious, but does not meet up to the colorful beaks on the birds. There is some mild cartoon violence in a few of the mini games (like Puffin 500).

I really like the ocean musical track in Puffins Island Adventure. The educational aspect of this Nintendo DS video game helps all of us learn about Puffins. I did not remember a lot about these birds, so aspects of Puffins Island Adventure were interesting. Getting to raise your own Puffin family is part of this game as well.

The mini games in Puffins Island Adventure are pretty simple and easy.  With over one hundred events there are a lot of different games to be played. I found a few that are stand out in my opinion. The Puffin Plummet was one of my favorites. I did find that unlocking the various mini games can get tedious. If more than one person has this game cartridge there are multi player modes. Sorry to those who like to use download play, because there are no modes for ya’ll.

Puffins Island Adventure explains the controls before each mini game. Usually these are pretty easy and intuitive. I enjoyed flying around the island, but it took me a few minutes to realize I could only land on or near these target looking stones. This is done to keep the player out of areas they have not yet opened.

Getting to create ones own bird family is a nice little lesson in Puffins Island Adventure. I enjoyed how the mini games are based (usually) on activities the birds actually do (like diving into the ocean for fish). I can see a real possibility for an entire franchise based on various animals. Maybe a penguins game would be a good idea. No dancing in it though.
