Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is the second game in the series on the Nintendo DS. This hand held video game is part puzzle, part mystery story, and part anime. The cartoon elements are so well done that it has me interested in finding seasons of this cartoon. Nintendo made sure there are a lot of twists and turns in this Nintendo DS game. Speaking of the storyline, there is this antique box that is supposed to kill anyone who opens it. A friend of the professor dies while researching the box. The catch is the box is gone, and evidence of someone left the scene of the crime.

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box has a lot of great animation. There is some comic mischief in this game. An example would be trying to rip a mask off a face of a character who does not have a mask on. I found scenes like that to be humorous personally. The character design is artistic in a nice way that is very family friendly.  There are various colors used, and this is not as dark as most mystery based video games.

I love how respectful characters like the professor are in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. He also corrects the young lad when he is not being respectful. The music is fantastic, and not as eerie as I thought it would be. I will not spoil any of the ending for you, but will say it is worth the playing of this DS game.

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box has a lot of difference puzzles and mini games that can be replayed. I feel that this game is worth the money because it really gets your brain working. I will get into this more in the gameplay section, but feel Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box stretched gamers in a really good way.

The touch screen controls compliment Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box quite well. I found there are plenty of screens that allow for button controls as well. If you get stuck there are hints in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. Personally I found only the last hint was actually any assistance. Special coins are spent on hints, and these can be found hidden in various screens all over the game.

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is about solving a mystery, and helping out a friend. I appreciate these themes, as well as how the professor (almost always) stands for truth. He will occasionally withold information from authority figures. I am glad Nintendo made a sequel, and heard there is another one on its way.
