Over the Hedge Hammy Goes Nuts

Who out there bought the first Over the Hedge video game? Someone must have because Activision decided to do a sequel. Since Family Friendly Gaming avoided the first one, we felt it was our duty to inform you of the second one. Okay so maybe the Working Man Gamer is the one who wants to inform all yous guys, but the editorial staff is letting me review this game. This video game is based on the mildly offensive cartoon movie Over the Hedge. Hammy goes nuts, and it is up to the player to save the animals as they venture forth into the human world. Avoiding the humans is important as well as bland quests. This game diverts from the original movie quite a bit.

Over the Hedge Hammy Goes Nuts does not look real good on the DS. There are pictures of the different animals that are decent, but the main screens where the game is played has a lot of small graphics. The WMG struggled trying to find objectives due to the graphical confusion of what certain items are. There is cartoon mischief of traps, and other such dangers to the player (err animal).

The music in Over the Hedge Hammy Goes Nuts on the DS is passable. There were a few annoying sounds in this video game, thankfully they were not around all the time. I would not want to hang around all day long listening to the music, but it did not make the WMG want to immediately turn off the DS.

The only reason players will replay any level in Over the Hedge Hammy Goes Nuts is because the objectives were not clear. In fact the WMG replayed the first level a couple of times before the general idea was gotten. In this day and age there is no reason for a video game publisher as big as Activision to release a game that frustrates the player. Save your money for a good game, and avoid this one on the bargain rack.

The issue of the lack of guidance has already been mentioned. Over the Hedge Hammy Goes Nuts has a major problem in that area. The touch screen controls work okay most of the time, however there were areas where the WMG had to re-check items to get them to properly function. This annoyance really brings this Nintendo DS game down. The WMG did not have fun playing Over the Hedge Hammy Goes Nuts.

There is a lot of rock star worship inside Over the Hedge Hammy Goes Nuts. The profession of the musician is glorified in a scary manner. The animals are treated as better than people, and humans are being shown as the problem. That kind of self hatred bothers the WMG deeply. Activision please stop making video game sequels to this series. The WMG was embarrassed to be seen playing this particular video game.
