Oliver and Company 20th Anniversary Edition

The WMG had not seen Oliver and Company before, so when Family Friendly Gaming received a reviewable copy, of the 20th Anniversary DVD the WMG volunteered. The movie is about a poor little kitty cat that does not get adopted. Left on the street in a tough New York city, this innocent character has to fend for himself. He meets up with Dodger and gets shafted. Persistence pays off and he gets in with a gang of dogs that steal for their master. The human master owes a mafia style character a lot of money, and has turned to stealing, and pawning items off to pay the debt. Oliver and Company 20th Anniversary Edition is sympathetic to the stealing, and rarely is the damage to the victims shown. Victims are usually shown as deserving of others stealing from them.

The WMG must admit some disappointment to the graphical style used in a lot of Oliver and Company 20th Anniversary Edition. The usual Disney charm is not there. There is also a lot of the darker images used in this movie, and some very scary moments that can bother younger viewers(editor: characters in peril).

There are a few catchy songs in this movie that can have kids singing and dancing. The lessons these songs teach the viewer are a little murkier. Certain songs are very friendly to criminals, at the expense of other people. There are other characters like Oliver and the little girl who exhibit caring, and love for one another. Some of the bad characters change their tune and do good instead of evil. It is unknown how long they walk the straight and narrow.

Disney continues their tradition of a healthy special features section. Oliver and Company 20th Anniversary Edition does not have as much as some other Disney DVD’s, but better than a lot of average movies out there today in the WMG’s opinion.

Oliver and Company 20th Anniversary Edition has some neat little menu screens to navigate around. The tie ins to the movie in the intelligently designed screens are very apparent. The WMG had some fun watching this movie, but noticed children left early. So it did not captivate children like other Disney DVD’s do.

Oliver and Company 20th Anniversary Edition has some real dark elements in it. Thankfully the end of the movie has good triumphing over evil. Sorry to spoil that if you have never seen the movie. The underbelly of New York city is explored in this DVD, and done in a ‘G’ rated way. The little girl and Oliver work well together. - Working Man Gamer
