Ni Hao Kai-lan Super Game Day

Ni Hao Kai-lan Super Game Day

Ni Hao, Kai-lan: Super Game Day brings the Nick Jr. hit of the same name to the Wii console. Fans of the show will enjoy using their favorite characters to catch butterflies, run soccer drills, pop bubbles and much more. Those not familiar with Ni Hao, Kai-lan can still enjoy the game – especially if they have young children.

There are 10 different locations, with one game per location available from the start. The character walks around areas, such as “the backyard”, and selects various games to play. In each location there are two additional games that can be unlocked. The second and third games will become available after playing each location 10 and 20 times, respectively. That may sound like a lot of playing, but each game only last about 60 seconds. As much fun as catching butterflies and walking in a parade can be, the repetitive nature of the games and lack of true depth will cause older gamers to lose interest rather quickly.

The control scheme is somewhat confusing as you are instructed to hold the Wii remote sideways while using the main screens, but most of the games use the upright direction for the remote. This is somewhat frustrating at first, but as you become accustomed to the changes they bother you less and less.. The in-game controls are simple and easy to use, geared specifically for younger gamers. The characters are assisted in basic movements (such as walking and aiming) while hints are given when player movements are required. The younger crowd will certainly appreciate the assistance, but the overly simplistic controls will turn older gamers off.

Ni Hao, Kai-lan: Super Game Day provides brightly colored environments in each location. Also, the developers did a fine job of creating the characters and using the voice talents of the preschool hit to make the game feel like an extension of the Nick Jr. cartoon.

Parents of preschool and elementary age children that are fans of the show should take a look at 2K Play’s offering. Since the games are compatible with 1 and 2 players, parents can discuss friendly competition with their young ones. Also, children can practice gross motor activities as the game suggests full body motions for some of the games. The lack of depth in gameplay will keep some from really enjoying Ni Hao, Kai-lan: Super Game Day, but it should be a blast for the younger audience.
