Monster Trucks Mayhem

Monster Truck based video games have had a long, and not so great history. Monster Truck Mayhem is an interesting mix. This Wii game is part racing game, and part monster truck smashing stuff. Quite a bit of the environments are destructible. Some levels are for racing, and others are challenges. The challenges are things like destroying so many objects in a certain time limit, or keeping opposing trucks out of a certain area.

It can be difficult to avoid destructible items on certain tracks. Racing down the center is generally faster, so there is an encouragement to race clean. Monster Truck Mayhem has decent details, and the environments are rich. Explosions occur quite a bit in the first lap of any race. The monster trucks look good, even if they are not realistic.

The rockish sounds in Monster Truck Mayhem woke me up. I enjoy this kind of music, so it enhanced the game play experience for me. You may have a different reaction, so be aware of the part of this game. If you fail a race or challenge, Monster Truck Mayhem gives you the option to immediately retry. There are even hints that are shown on loading screens.

Winning a race, or challenge unlocks another race or vehicle. There are enough races to keep gamers busy for a few weeks. There are some really cool trucks in Monster Truck Mayhem, and I appreciate the creativity of the developers. Only one player can play Monster Truck Mayhem at a time.

The controls in Monster Truck Mayhem are generally good. There are places the trucks can get stuck. Thankfully the developers included a reverse button. Once I found those spots, I knew to avoid them. I had fun playing Monster Truck Mayhem. My main complaint is this Wii game is on the easy side.

I learned a few lessons in Monster Truck Mayhem. The main lesson is to get to the finish line first. Another lesson is to run over whatever gets in your way. I like the mixture of racing with monster truck action. I think that Zoo Games may be onto something with this formula. The destruction part of the game is the one aspect that may bother some family members.
