Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2
SCORE: 65
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 on the Nintendo DS is a scaled down model
of the home console game. There are less levels, but some of them are
very similar to their bigger cohorts. She-Hulk and Sentry are exclusive
to this version of the game. Players take four Marvel super heroes on a
punching and kicking journey to stop the super villains. It was
interesting to see the various bad guys. At times I was not really sure
of their motivations, but I may be over analyzing it. The Nintendo DS
version contains 15 playable super heroes.
The visuals in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 are better in terms of detail
than I was expecting. There is a lot of fighting images as various
enemies try to stop the super heroes. Special effects get large and in
charge when certain characters use their special moves. I felt like
there was a lot of deja vu in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. Two or three
enemies would run towards my team, and that happened a lot. I found a
few graphical glitches (like when running forward into incoming fire -
the graphics would skip)
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 has decent music that fits the theme of this
story. There is some language problems as certain characters are rougher
than others. Nick Fury is almost as gruff as some of the villains.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 contains quite a few explosive sounds as
certain items are combustible. I would advise parents to use the E10+
rating as a starting line.
The DS version of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 does not contain as many
characters as the larger home console versions. There are still a fair
amount. This is also a blessing as less characters means less
questionable content. The quest is long enough to keep most hand held
gamers busy for a few weeks. Be sure and save on the checkpoints, since
the game does not automatically do that for you. Four players can play
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 together.
The majority of the controls are great in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. I
would occasionally get stuck behind a team member, and have to shake
them off me. I also had problems taking out certain items (oil drum
looking things). I like how Activision used certain aspects of the touch
screen in specific areas of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. The hacking and
slashing action did not get as boring as I thought it would. That is
probably because there is so much more story told in this version of the
game.
I was surprised to see certain older people concepts in Marvel Ultimate
Alliance 2. Certain super villains make comments that make some of their
actions seem plausible. It got me thinking about certain ideas, and I am
sure that was the reason it was put in there. The main lesson I got out
of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 is I can use violence to defeat the bad
guys.
