Marvel Super Hero Squad

My boys love playing with the little Marvel Super Hero Squad toys. A video game based on the toys (editor: and television show) perked my ears right up. To make matters even more interesting THQ is the publisher. They are well known in the family friendly gaming circles. Technically they are well known in every gaming circle. Marvel Super Hero Squad is two kinds of games. First off there is the punch and kick levels, and then there is knock em off the roof levels. There is some Wii Remote centered levels on the Wii version as well. I like how kid friendly the action is kept in this game. Think of Marvel Ultimate Alliance with the violence toned way down. THQ has proven that this genre can be made without blood, gore, and bad language.

The graphics in Marvel Super Hero Squad shine. The Marvel characters animated extremely well, and they look great. It is like the toys have come to life. There is a lot of humor in this game that is similar to what the television show contains. Characters fall off ledges, and there is punching, kicking, and special power moves. Marvel Super Hero Squad does contain violence, and earns its E10+ rating.

The music that greeted me when I started this Wii game surprised me. It is a really catchy tune. I was even more impressed to find the music video when I was poking around the extras. Marvel Super Hero Squad has very friendly dialogue. Players are told to take out all the enemies, and their equipment. There is also instructions to stop bad guys from breaking down a specific door. This game congratulates the player on a job well done, and does not dwell on mistakes made.

THQ has impressed me for a long time with the amount of extras they put in their games. Marvel Super Hero Squad is no exception. The fact that there is multiplayer modes as well as the main story mode may seem normal. The thing is each of those modes could easily have been their own game, and other publishers do just that. There are a lot of characters in this game, and plenty of extras to keep you busy until Christmas.

The controls in Marvel Super Hero Squad are very simple. I quickly adapted to the buttons, although I kept wanting to jump with ‘B’ for some reason. The action in Marvel Super Hero Squad is generally proper. There were a few levels that irritated me. Going out defeating guys, running back to defend a door, and repeating that quite a bit stands out. The flow is broken up just enough to give players a break from the violence.

Marvel Super Hero Squad is a game that families can enjoy as long as super heroes and villains do not bother you. I had fun with this game, and would like to see sequels. Fighting against evil is the main lesson in this game. If your kids want Marvel Ultimate Alliance this would be a much better alternative.
