Marley and Me
SCORE: 76
Marley & Me is all about an undisciplined, unruly, and destructive labrador. Owen Wilson (John Grogan), and Jennifer Aniston (Jennifer Grogan) headline this film. They start out getting a dog because they are not sure they are ready for children. Eventually they have children, and they get to grow up with Marley as well. Marley is not all bad as John Grogan uses his misbehaving dog as inspiration, and stories in his column (for the paper that employs him). Marley & Me shows a lot of real life, and does a good job leaving behind a lot of the normal Hollywood judgmental attitudes.
Marley & Me has a lot of images of the dog being out of control, and destroying things. This leads to arguments in the family, and things like a toddler being knocked down. There are also sexually suggestive images on this DVD. They are kept within the confines of marriage so that is a positive. The love the family shows for one another and their pet is admirable.
The audio department of Marley & Me is a major mix. There are great lessons about sticking with marriage, and being a parent no matter how hard it gets. There is also a very supportive conversation for mothers that stay at home to raise their children. The dark side of Marley & Me is language. There are certain characters who use certain words a lot on this DVD. Because of this I will not let my children watch this movie.
Family Friendly Gaming received a special screening copy of Marley & Me that contains some special features. It is possible that the commercial release will contain additional special features. Many of the extras relate to additional destructive behavior by the dogs used in this movie.
The menu screens operate well, and I had no problems with navigation. I must say that Marley & Me drew me in emotionally, and I wound up crying at a certain point. Even though Marley & Me is a DVD it really touches on so many real life, and real world concepts that I enjoyed the movie.
Choices and living with
the consequences is one of the major lessons in Marley & Me. The lack of
discipline is also shown. The family survives the dog, and the eventual
death of the dog directly relates to that lack of discipline. As I have
mentioned before there are also other important issues touched upon. I
appreciate how Jennifer quit her job to raise their children. This is an
awesome example that I was not expecting to see. My major complaint
about Marley & Me is the language issue. I wish that had been toned
down. The message of marriage and raising children are really good.
