Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games
SCORE: 88
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Nintendo Wii is just what the title describes. Mario and Sonic team up to compete in Olympic events in Beijing. Characters from both franchises participate in some friendly competition. In some ways this video game reminds me of the old Track and Field game. There can be some crazy mashing with the controller to try and get that gold medal. This is the first time that Mario and Sonic have appeared in the same video game (editor: but not the last time).
There are some wonderful colors found within Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. In fact both Team Mario, and Team Sonic make wonderful use of the color spectrum. There is some mild comic mischief in the game, and fencing can get a little violent at times. Sega also made sure that this game is encouraging when the player falls short, and I really appreciate that.
I enjoyed the music in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. It was not the best I have heard, but it was pretty neat to hear while playing. The special effect sounds fit the theme of this game. I did not find any language issues, or other audio problems while playing this Nintendo Wii video game.
There are plenty of unlockables, characters to play, modes to explore, and Olympic information to learn. Sega did a really good job in this regard. If the game play issues (coming up in the next paragraph) do not bother you, then this game would be worth your hard earned dollars. In my opinion this game is a good deal at thirty US dollars or less.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games changes the controls in almost every single Olympic event. Most of them work well, but there are a few that wound up frustrating me. The difficulty level of this game alone should give it a ‘T’ for Teen rating. What I mean is younger children will not enjoy this game because it is too hard for them. I did like how the game would suggest I take a breather from time to time.
The majority of Mario & Sonic at the
Olympic Games is safe for the entire family. Skeet, and Fencing may
bother some families. If you allow your children to watch it at the
Olympics then you probably won’t mind them playing it with Sonic, and
Mario characters. I would like a sequel to this Wii video game,
especially if the control issues are cleared up.
