MandMs Beach Party

The M&M’s are back, and this time in the highly anticipated M&M’s Beach Party. The WMG had a lot of high expectations for this game, and unfortunately it did not quite live up to them. The first problem the WMG ran into was moving the cool looking 3D M&M character (that the WMG selected) around the beach. The Wii Remote is the only control used for this game, so the WMG pointed at the screen, and pressed a button, hoping the character would walk there. This did nothing, so after multiple failures the little D-pad on the Wii Remote was used. Not only is this cumbersome, but confusing. The mini games use the Wii Remote in an intelligent fashion why not the main world. Then the realization that there are only six mini games to play sunk in. There are other games on the Wii market with five times as many mini games on one disc for the same price (editor: or less by now).

Visually speaking there are some great colors used in M&M’s Beach Party. The artistic look seems to be either hit or miss with those of us at Family Friendly Gaming that played it. There is some blandness to certain things like Skee-ball. There is also one mini game where M&M’s get shot to get their color.

M&M’s Beach Party has some cool music that made this Wii game feel like it is on the beach. The special effects sounds were okay. Some of the mini games felt a little too quiet for this reviewer. However those that respect serenity may love it. The WMG did not find any offensive sounds or language while playing this Wii game.

M&M’s Beach Party has a few mini games that the WMG enjoyed replaying. With only six of them though it limited the interest level, and hurt this game. There are multiplayer modes so the whole family can play together. M&M’s Beach Party includes multiple difficulty settings.

The biggest problem this reviewer has with M&M’s Beach Party is the controls. The intro paragraph touched upon them. Not only are the controls of moving around between mini games difficult, but a few of the mini games are frustrating to play. Volleyball is the biggest problem the WMG ran into. The paint shooting game ran out of paint too fast, which meant constantly shaking the Wii Remote to refill it.

M&M’s Beach Party had a lot of potential. As far as the family goes this Wii game is safe for all members. The control issues, and few mini games are bigger issues. A sequel would be welcome if those two issues are addressed.
