LostWinds

LostWinds is one of the early Wiiware downloadable video games. Some of ya’ll may be asking why did I take so long to review it. Honestly there were games that were a higher priority, and LostWinds is not the easiest game to put down and pick up again later. LostWinds has one game play mechanic going for it. Quickly move the Wii Remote cursor over the screen to generate wind (editor: on screen only). This wind can be used to lift the character across chasms, clear leaves, or other things. Sure this sounds strange on paper, but it becomes second nature when playing LostWinds. That is when it works. Be patient we will be getting there shortly. (or not so shortly depending on how quickly you read).

LostWinds has some areas that are bright, colorful, and just beautiful to behold. Then there are some cave areas that are not as cool. Don’t get me wrong the caves have mushrooms and stuff like that, but not at the same level as the above ground graphics. There is some violence as enemies are disposed of by the player. I like the artwork in this Wii home video game.

LostWinds has some awesome music that caught my ear. The wind noises fit the theme of this Wiiware title perfectly. There is talk of magic, and the like that could have been left on the drawing board. There is more positive than negative in the sounds of LostWinds in my opinion.

If there is one area that LostWinds is lacking that is in the replay section. This WiiWare is pretty short, and after beating it there is little reason to ever replay it. Only one player can play LostWinds at a time so it won’t build community either. This Wiiware title is cheaper than many other games, but I feel like your money would be more useful somewhere else.

I give Frontier points for some innovative ideas in the game play of LostWinds. The whole concept of using wind to do things is a really cool idea. Problem is it does not always work in the game. This led to a lot of frustration, and another reason I took so long to review it. I did have some fun the first hour or so, but after that the game play issues dragged this game down.

With all of that said, I would like to see a sequel to LostWinds (maybe FoundWinds). Frontier has a good idea, and if they could just perfect it, then they could make a really good game. The majority of LostWinds is safe for the whole family, just be aware of the magical element included.
