Katamari Forever

The Katamari games are some of the strangest in all of video game history. The fact that this franchise has been around for awhile shows what a loyal following it has. Players roll around a ball that sticks items to it. The more items that are attached the large the ball grows. The player must roll the ball to a certain size in a specific time limit in order to progress. Katamari Forever is not an easy game. The storyline in this game is the King of All Cosmos bumped his head and lost his memory. His son tries to create a robot version, which runs amok and destroys all the stars.

I like how Namco Bandai included four different graphical filters in Katamari Forever. There are plenty of known items like thumb tacks, candy canes, and the like in various levels. I felt bad when I would roll over a sheep, and get it stuck on my orb. I noticed flying witches in one level of Katamari Forever. Generally the graphics are visually safe for the entire family though.

Certain language issues exist in Katamari Forever, however they seem to be improved in my opinion. The music is interesting and is still stuck in my head. I liked how the son is trying to help the father. Getting punished for not performing well enough is an interesting concept. The whole King of All Cosmos has been toned down in this game, and Family Friendly Gaming appreciates that.

Up to two players can compete against one another in Katamari Forever on the Playstation 3.  There are various modes, and a lot of unlockables. Not all of the content will appeal to families though. Gamers will have to replay the same levels to get to the right size.

Katamari Forever is hard. This series has been known for that, and this game continues that tradition. The controls took a minute to learn, but once I did I was off to the races. Collecting all kinds of items to turn them into stars is a strange concept. I did not find this concept offensive in case you were curious. I had fun playing Katamari Forever, just wish there was a better learning curve. I like how Namco Bandai included various aspects of the SIXAXIS controller into the game play.

Katamari Forever is one of those games that one could either go deeply into philosophically, or scratch their head and say its different. I choose the later of those two. Many parts of the story are there to give the player a game. Without certain elements there would be no reason for the game.
