Half-Minute Hero

Role playing games are generally known to be builders of patience. Half-Minute Hero breaks the mold. The player has thirty seconds to stop the evil character(s). This involves leveling up, solving puzzles (like finding a secret path to the castle, or fixing a broken bridge). Sound impossible? Well there is a time goddess who allows the player to reset the clock. All the player has to do is pay her money. The RPG Master found spending the first thirty seconds fighting monsters, and leveling up is the smartest idea. Thankfully the armor gained in previous areas stays with the player.

Half-Minute Hero has a very old school look to it. In fact most of this game looks like it is 8-bit. Players destroy the opposition in various manners of cartoon violence. Running into them with a sword, shooting them with arrows are the two best examples. Half-Minute Hero does have some nice cut scene graphics in certain parts of this Playstation Portable (PSP) game. There are also sexual themes present, and questionable attire on certain characters.

The whole time goddess thing was really weird. There is attempts at humor in Half-Minute Hero. The RPG Master says attempts because most of the jokes were really bad. The game actually admits to its own bad jokes, so that is a good thing. Half-Minute Hero has some neat music that fits the theme of this game. Get low on those thirty seconds and the game will let you know. This PSP game contains a diverse set of characters who all play their roles as expected.

Half-Minute Hero is like multiple different role playing game styles all rolled into one. There is the action adventure role playing, shooter, escort missions, and strategy. A level can easily be beat in one minute, but there are so many different levels. Gamers can easily spend twenty hours on Half-Minute Hero.

The controls in Half-Minute Hero are very easy to pick up, as long as you can read. Failure is a possibility, but this PSP game is very forgiving. In fact you can take as many swings at it as you need. It did not make the RPG Master feel bad to fail a level for a couple of reasons. First off the levels play very fast, so not a lot of time was lost. Secondly, mistakes are usually known right off the bat. Half-Minute Hero is a fun game to play in this reviewers opinion. The temporal mechanic works wonders for this game.

It may seem obsessive to some, but the majority of the families that read Family Friendly Gaming are going to have a problem with the time goddess. The RPG Master was not fond of it, and wish there had been regionalization in this area. With that said, sequels to this franchise are welcome by this FFG reviewer.
