GI Joe The Rise of Cobra
SCORE: 65
G.I. Joe is partially responsible for my joining the Air Force and becoming a disabled war veteran. I have had a special place in my heart for this franchise for a very long time. The comic books, cartoons, and even toys. In fact I still have some of them. So when I first heard about the live action movie, I was interested. I have not seen the movie yet, but EA has been gracious enough to provide Family Friendly Gaming with a reviewable copy of G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra on the Nintendo DS.
EA took this game in an interesting direction. It reminds me of Gauntlet in a couple of ways. The overhead camera angle is used, and enemies spawn from generators that must be destroyed. Various environments are included, and they all look very realistic. G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra looks better visually than I expected. There is violence (main part of the game play) so this DS game earns its E10+ rating.
The best word to describe the music in G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra is powerful. I really got into the music in this hand held title. The storyline is about stopping the evil terrorists, and keeping all of us safe. I can relate to this, and appreciate what the military has done to keep us safe. G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra gives you the objectives one at a time to avoid confusion and that makes this game flow smoother.
G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra is a lengthy title with various unlockable content. EA also included multi-card wireless play. That means if you and a friend both have a copy of this game you can play together. If you like G.I. Joe or the Gauntlet style of game you will find your money well spent on G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra.
I have one complaint against G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra. For some reason I would get caught on the edges of certain things. I could not always immediately back away either. This was a frustration that never cost me a life (in the game), but it did slow the game down. The map showing the objectives is a nice touch in this DS game. I still had fun playing G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra, even though I had to give many objects a wide berth.
There are a couple of ways to look at G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra.
There is violence used to defeat the bad guys. They vanish immediately,
and I am focusing more on stopping evil. If you want to have less
talking in your game play with Snake-Eyes. Plus using a sword is better
than a gun.
