GI Joe Season 1.1
SCORE: 70
When I was a child I loved G.I. Joe. I watched the television show, read the comics, and played with the action figures. Hasbro got a lot of money thanks to me, so it was an a successful campaign on their part. Fast forward to the year of our Lord 2009, and I still have some fond memories of G.I. Joe. I have since sold off the comic books, and the overwhelming majority of the action figures. I wondered how I would take a return to the cartoon in the form of G.I. Joe Season 1.1. This 4 disc DVD set includes three of the five part stories The M.A.S.S. Device, The Revenge of Cobra, The Pyramid of Darkness and seven other episodes. A total running time of eight hours is included on these discs.
There are some fantastic scenes of animation in G.I. Joe Season 1.1. I wish some of the fast 3D effects had been used more often, but thats just me. There is a lot of explosions, and laser shots. Something that always puzzled me about G.I. Joe is many of the characters (Flint for example) have shells on their bodies, but they fire laser guns. So what is the point of the shells? Even though there is a lot of violence I took special note of characters being left alive. For example when a plane or helicopter is shot down there is an image of the character jumping out and being saved. Characters get guns shot out of their hands, and are taken into custody. I appreciate the lack of death in G.I. Joe Season 1.1.
The music from G.I. Joe Season 1.1 is still stuck in my head. The scores used for this television show are some of the most memorable around. I found that children who watched G.I. Joe Season 1.1 with me started saying: “Yo JOE,” and “COBRA” after watching episodes. There is unfortunately a down side to this television show as well. There is a fair amount of name calling. This all comes from the bad guys as they insult one another with words like buffoon, imbecile, and more.
I personally appreciated the extras included in G.I. Joe Season 1.1. The Looking Back interviews with writer Ron Friedman are very fascinating. The public service announcements (Knowing is Half the Battle) are still worthwhile in this day and age.
Continuous play for multiple episodes like the five part mini series is perfect. It makes those five episodes to be like watching a cartoon movie. The menu screens are laid out in an intelligent manner. I love the storyline of good triumphing over evil. In this day and age of terrorists it is nice to see a resurgence in a show that has specially trained troops fighting off terrorists.
G.I. Joe Season 1.1 is a
wonderful example of how evil is present and must be fought off. Bowing
to those with evil in their hearts never succeeds. That is the main
lesson in this DVD set. I do have one concern with G.I. Joe Season 1.1
and that is in the Satellite Down episode. Some half man, half ape like
creatures are declared to be real. This is an under handed attempt to
teach the religion of evolution.
