Flock

Flock! is a game that impressed me at E3 in the year of our Lord 2008. Players take on the role of a UFO that herds sheep into the mothership. Most of the areas are destructible in some form or another. Capcom included plenty of pitfalls like pits where the poor sheep can fall to their poor little demise. There are some cool features like water shrinking the flock so they can fit through fences. Other fences can be moved away thanks to the repulsor beam from the UFO. Flock! is downloadable on the Personal Computer (PC), Playstation 3 (PS3), and Xbox 360. The last two were used for this review.

Flock! impressed me in the visuals. The artwork has a soft, gentle, and friendly feel to it. The sheep are humorous in many ways, and the environment allows for a lot of fun. An example would be to pull the leaves off a tree, leaving only a stump. The romance tiles are interesting since a lot of hearts come out, and then the two sheep produce a lot of baby sheep. No need for concern, or protests because this is all kept family friendly by the developer. Sheep can die due to mistakes by the player, but this is genuinely discouraged.

I found most sounds in Flock! to be pleasant, uplifting, and appropriately themed. The sounds of the poor little sheep falling to their demise were annoying. That is my only quibble with the audio section of this downloadable. I did not fly into any offensive language while playing this video game.

There are a lot of levels in Flock!, and plenty of diversity to the game play. Action puzzle fans will find a lot to like in this particular video game. The fifty plus levels may seem small for a puzzle game, however there is also a level editor creator, and a co-op mode as well. Getting to share levels with friends, and family members is one of my personal favorite extras contained within Flock!. The price of this game is reasonable, and there is a free demo that can be downloaded as well.

Capcom has advertised the physics used in Flock!, and it is impressive in some ways. I did run into a few issues trying to herd my flock to the mother ship. At times I could easily run them the right direction, and others they would go the wrong direction. Being a time based puzzle game this led to frustration. Successfully solving a level and completing it was fun, but that fun was pretty fleeting. I also found out that I could not pick up a sheep and move it (that lead to the death of my fluffy friend).

I appreciate the goal of trying to herd all the sheep. The Holy Bible teaches quite a bit about sheep, and shepherds were among the first to see baby Jesus. I would like to see a sequel to Flock! in the very near future.
